Spring!

Spring is here!   In my part of the country the trees are in bloom and the ones that aren’t have leaves growing on the trees again, buttercups and tulips are in full bloom, and the weather is back to a warm 72 degrees F.  It totally lifts my spirits to be able to sit outside again and be comfotable!  I’m looking forward to planting a couple of raised beds with vegetables and herbs. (I know, I need more to do! )  Here are a couple pics of spring’s progress!

I just decided that I needed to diversify myself.  I’m creating t-shirt slogans and selling them online. I do not a very wide selection so far, but I am working on it.

I am also redesigning my “realsoutherncooks.com” website.  You won’t see any changes to it right away as Rob and I are still working on it behind the scenes. I am excited about it though.  It is a much better look and feel to the site.  It is going to be a lot of work but well worth it I think.  I will post when we will go live with the new look a little closer to time, but in the meantime, you can still check out my t-shirt page. Shop till you drop!

Winter!

Wow! My little town is getting sacked with snow.  Yea, I know a lot of you are thinking, so what?   We do not get snow very often! I live in the Southern U.S. and it’s a big deal here!  People roll in the sidewalks and close up everything that isn’t vital.  All schools are closed, and probably most businesses will be running skeleton crews of who ever can make it into work. Yep, that’s what happens when your city doesn’t own any snow plows. That is problem number one.  We do have truck to salt icy bridges and over passes, but no snow plows.  They simply wouldn’t be used but every 2 to 4 years.  No, what my city does instead is drag out the construction equipment.  That’s right, ye ole road grader subs as a snow plow in a pinch.  Moving snow instead of earth to make sure vital roads are passable.  By vital roads I mean the road to get to the hospital and in front of pharmacies and grocery stores.

Every one that does not have to be out and about is urged to stay home and off the streets. That is problem number 2 when it snows in the South.  People have no idea how to drive in snow, but the rednecks consider it a mission to try!  Yikes! Bubba in his 4×4 truck with the rebel flag flying in the back spinning tires and squealing with glee down the road is really very scary!  I think I will just take the officials advice and stay in. :)

It’s been snowing for about 2 hours and we already have 4 to 5 inches on the ground.  I will upload pics soon, it’s night time here now so as soon as I can.

UPDATE: In all we ended up with 13 inches of snow on the ground.  It took a week before it all melted away. Although this picture was taken after the snow had about melted away, I thought this snowman was hilarious!

He is aiming his moon towards the street lol

People

I have notice lately that people have become more distant.  I do realize that everyone is feeling the financial strains of our current economy and the rapidly approaching  holidays merely adds fuel to the fire.  I firmly believe that there is another reason; a more technological reason.

A lot of my friends choose to converse sent messages to all using Facebook, Twitter, and the rare few that still use Myspace, instead of emailing a personal note.  It’s very sad to think that a personal email could soon be a thing of the past.  Now we are reduced to a quick post on Facebook for all to see.  It really takes the “personal” aspect away and becomes a more selfish, “it’s all about me” broadcast.

In one rare incidence a family member tried to tell me that another close family member was ill via Facebook.  The attempt to tell me this way failed miserably!  I actually found out via my best friend who called me voice and told me that this family member had been hospitalized and had almost died!  Excuse me, what!  You tried to tell me via Facebook!?!  Broadcast across the internet for all to see?  Then why did I not see it? Is it just me or does that makes it about them personally and not about the patient? Well after my best friend called I immediately went to the broadcaster’s Facebook page.  Let’s call the broadcaster Pam.  I tried to find the post where Pam said that the patient was sick.  Let’s call the patient Helen.  I dug down 3 layers on Pam’s Facebook page looking for news of Helen’s illness.  I found nothing.  After realizing that I did not know fully how to navigate Facebook’s interface very well I finally gave up.   I picked up the telephone and  called other family members to let them know that Helen had been ill but was now recovering.

I really felt wronged somehow.  The more I thought about the things  I put up with on that webpage the less I wanted to have an identity there!  There were always endless request from people wanting me to help their farm, to help with Mafia wars, or the multitude of other little programs that can send a ton of spyware to your computer by sending or receiving  a friendship message.  Bump that! No more!

I am deleting my Facebook Identity and coming out of that selfish “all eyes on me”  virtual reality community. I’m going back to emailing personal notes to my friends and asking them how their day has been.  I’m going back to calling friends on the phone to see if they are ok.  I’m going back to giving my friends a special feeling because they were personally remembered by me and not just a selfish  broadcast to let them know how my world is going while I seem to have lost interest in theirs. Yes, maybe some will call me old fashioned, maybe some will say that I am over reacting, but I know that people that call to inquire about my day truly care about me and are genuinely interested in my well being.  Technology has done a lot for us and I wouldn’t want to change that for any reason.  With that said, technology can still not replace the one on one conversations that we need.  I personally feel that they never should!

Ok, I have another stray that has adopted us!  He looks like Crackers doesn’t he?  I wonder if he’s her dad?  He’s a full grown male blue point Siamese /Tabby mix.  He’s a little cross – eyed but has a very loving disposition.  He’s a very gentle soul and loves attention.

Want to help me name him?  Just reply to this post and tell me what you think his name should be.

UPDATE!  We have decided that this Tom is a “neighborhood cat”.  You know, one that wanders from house to house and can have several masters.  Mostly he just loves to eat! lol We did decide that if he’s going to hang around we had to call him something!  So I decided he looks like an Al.  There is a funny story as to how that came about.

You see, he really loved my cat named Gizmo.  Yes, Gizmo my male cat.  I guess since Al is cross-eyed he couldn’t tell the difference.  He followed Gizmo for days, and you know this thoroughly ticked Gizmo off.  So we started calling him “Big Gay Al”, like the character in South Park.  It was a term of endearment though.  His name has since morphed into Alfred and he’s a sweet little visitor that we feed to this day. :)

UPDATE:  Alfred was truly a community cat.  He would come by every day to eat get a scratch behind his ears and be on his way.  It’s been a month now since we have seen him so I’m not sure what has happened to him.  I’m going with the theory that his owner finally got him neutered and now he’s a lazy home body…yea, that’s it!

I Don’t Like Spam!

No matter how careful you are, no matter how many spam filters you apply somehow spammers always find a way to get an email or message through to your inbox.  When are these people going to give it up and go get a real job?  Or are there still enough stupid people clicking their links and filling in those phishing forms to keep them from having to find a day job?  You would think that people would learn!

Gone are the days of instant post blogs and web sites.  This is a necessity to keep the unwanted degenerates out.  It is always the actions of a few that ruin things for the majority. *day dreaming*  Wouldn’t it be lovely to live in a spam -free world?  But alas it is what it is.

Posts on this website have to be approved so to all the would-be spammers out there…don’t bother!  sheesh!

One of Those Days!

Have you ever had one of those days where you can’t seem to get anything accomplished?  That is me today!  I feel like I am having one of those dreams where you’re running and running but you can’t get away from your pursuer no matter how hard you try!  It’s like running in place.

I’m going to try to focus a little more and see if I can keep this day from being a total loss!

I think I can, I think I can….

Is it just me or have you ever had a day like this?

I found my cats playing with this in my front yard.  Anyone know what kind it is?  I say it’s a rat snake.
